Lionforest,oneofthefourfamousgardensinSuzhou,hasahistoryofmorethan650yearsandistherepresentativeofgardeninYuanDynasty.No.23YuanyuanRoad,locatedinthenortheastcornerofSuzhouCity,JiangsuProvince,isarectanglewithawidthfromeasttowest,coveringanareaof1.1hectaresandanopenareaof0.88hectares.Therearerockeriesalloverthepark,surroundedbylongcorridors,buildingslooming,windingpathsleadingtoseclusion,withthegeneralfeelingofmaze.ThewallofthecorridorisembeddedwiththecalligraphystelesofSuShi,MiFu,HuangTingjianandCaiXiang,aswellastheinscriptionofplumblossompoembyWenTianxiangoftheSouthernSongDynasty.ThisgardenwasbuiltbyZenmastertianruofYuanDynastyinmemoryofhisteacher,ZenmasterZhongfeng.Inthefirstgate,theteacherof"Shizilin"istheteacher'steacher.Later,becausethereweremanyrockeriesinthegarden,whichlookedlikealion,itwaschangedtotheLionForestinthewayofwriting,andhasbeenuseduptonow.Theword"LionForest"ontheforeheadoftheticketofficewaswrittenbyEmperorQianlongoftheQingDynasty.
Stepintothegarden,youcanseeahall,whichistheBeiancestralhall.Inthemiddleoftheplaque,thereisGuTinglong'shandwritten"YunlinYiyun",whichisoneofthedesignersoflionforest.NiYunlin'sdesignhasthecharmofemptinessandquietness.Thewoodenrailingsonbothsidesofthecorridorarecarvedwithpeony,PhoenixandShoucharacters,andhangingscreenswithvasesandshellleaves.BeiyeisusedtowriteBuddhistscriptures,whichnotonlyreflectsthatShizilinisaplaceforZentostudyBuddhism,butalsohascommemorativesignificance,becausethelastmasterofShizilinisBeiye.Theancestralhallisaplaceforworshipingandworshipingancestorsandgatheringofclansmen.Ontheroof,therearestatuesofthreeimmortals,Fu,LuandShou,andachild.Itshowsthatthegardenownerhopesthathisdescendantscanbeoutstandingandglorifytheirancestors.Attheentranceofthecorridor,thereistheword"Chunhua",whichmeansthegardenisfullofspring.Pleasegoahead.
ItissaidthatthestonelionsinthelionforestcamefromTianmuMountaininZhejiangProvince.TheeightimmortalstieGuaiLiandLVChunyangwenttothebanquetofthequeenmotherandrodeagreenlionpastTianmuMountain.Fromthetopofthemountaincameaclearspring.LiZheng,Tieguai,wasthirsty.HewasveryhappyandfelldowntoYuntou.Hetookdownhisowngourdandwenttothespringtodrink.Thegreenlionalsojumpedintothewatertoplay.Afteramoment,thelionclimbeduptotheshoreandshookhisbody.Thewateronhisbodywasscatteredonthesurroundingrocks,andsuddenlybecameagroupoflivelyandlovelylittlelions.ThegreenLionplayswiththelittlelionsintimately.TieguaiLismilesandsaystoLVYuyang,"look,thegreenlionhasmovedeveryone'sheart.Nowthattherearesomanydescendants,let'spunishhimtobealionkinghere."Afterthat,withthehelpoftheironcrutch,thelionsturnedbacktotheappearanceofstones,andthegreenlionsturnedintoamountainpeakbecausetheycouldn'tbeartoleave.
InSongRenzong'stime,ZhongfengmonkofZhejiangGuoshitemplehadaprofoundBuddhism.Oneday,hetraveledtoTianmuMountainandrecitedscripturesinJielu.Everymorning,herecitedscripturesinfrontofQingshimountain.Itturnedoutthathewasaneminentmonkandknewtheoriginofshiziyanandshizifeng.Lioniscalledliondragon(Suān'ní)inBuddhism.ItisthebeastofBuddhism.Hewantstoenlightenthegreenlionandmakeitreturntoitsoriginalappearance.Foralongtime,becauseIoftenlistentotheeminentmonk'swords,Ibecameaspiritandbecameagreenlionagain.ThegreenlionbecamemonkZhongfeng'smount.MonkZhongfengrodethegreenliontovisithisapprenticetianruZenmasterinPutitempleinSuzhou.ThereweremanystrangestonesinPutitemple,andtheshapeofthemwasvivid,likemanylions.ThegreenlionwasveryhappyandthoughtthathehadreturnedtothelioncolonyintheBuddhistkingdom,sohechangedintoalionbee,andthelionfurscatteredonthegreenlionbecameavarietyoflioncubs.SomeareplayingwithHydrangea,somearefightingwithtwolions,andsomearefullofprestige.WhenZenmastertianrusawhishandstogether,heevensaid"Amitabha".Hepraisedmastertianruforhisboundlesspowerandperfectmerits.BodhiTemplebecamethekingdomofBuddhaandlion.MonkZhongfengsaid,"itmightaswellbecalledlionforest."Sothestonelionsinthelionforestarefamous.
Greenlionisveryhappytostayinthelionforest,butheisworriedaboutTieguaiLi.Inafitofanger,hepunishedthegreenliontostayatthetopofTianmuMountain.Whenhewentback,hewasalittlereluctanttothinkaboutit.Whenhewentbacktolookforit,therewasnotrace.TieguaiLiYuvisitedallthefamousmountainsandrivers,buthehadnowhereabouts.OnedaywhenIpassedbySuzhou,IsawtheLionPeakinthelionforestfromalongdistance.Isn'titthegreenlion.Afterenteringtherockerygroupoflionforest,tieGuaiLiwalkedslowlyandlostcontactwithLVChunyang.IsawLuChunyanginfrontofmefromadistance,butIcouldn'tgetoutoftherockerytomeethim.TieguaiLiwasinahurryandsatinthecaveinahurry.LVChunyangalwayslosestotieGuaiLiinchess.Hethinksthatthisopportunityhascome,soheaskstieGuaiLitoplayagameofchessinthefalsecave.IfLVChunyangwins,hewillcarryhimout.TieguaiLiagreedbecausehelostlessandwonmoreinchessinthepast.Unexpectedly,becausehewastrappedinarockery,hewasinapanicandwaskilledbyLVChunyang.
TieguaiLihadnochoicebuttobegformercyfromLVChunyang.LuChunyangsaid:"Ithinkthegreenlionisveryhappytostayinthelionforest,soI'llstayherewiththeliongrandson.".TieGuaiLiwaseagertogooutandagreed.LuChunyangtooktieguailioutoftherockery.
Nowwhenyougototherockeryinthelionforest,youhavetobecareful.Don'tbeasstubbornasLi.Thegameofchesshelostinthoseyearsisstillintherockerycave.
Thelionforestismountainousinthesoutheastandwateryinthenorthwest.Itissurroundedbyhighwalls,deephousesandwindingcorridors.Takingthecentralpoolasthecenter,buildinghousesbypilingmountains,transplantingflowersandtrees,anderectingbridgesandpavilionsmakethelayoutofthewholegardencompactandfulloftheartisticconceptionof"closetothemountainsandforests".Thelionforestisfamousforitspavilions,terraces,towers,pavilions,halls,pavilionsandcorridors.Itisalsoknownasthe"rockerykingdom".TherearemanyandexquisiterockeriesinShizilin,withexquisiterocks,windingcavesandravines,whicharelikeenteringamaze.Itisknownas"EighteenscenesofTaoyuan".Atthetopofthecave,therearemanystrangepeaksandrocks,alllikealiondancing.ThereareHanhui,tuyue,Xuanyu,angxiaandotherfamouspeaks,andtheLionPeakisthefirstofthem.ThemainbuildingintheparkisYanyuhall,behindwhichisasmallsquarehallandLixuehall.Tothewest,youcangettoBaixuan,whichisatwo-storyatticwithaverandaallaround.It'stall,coolandexquisite.TothewestofBaixuanisguwupinegarden.Thesouthwestcornerisjianshanlou.FromJianshantowertothewest,youcangettothelotushall.Inthenorthwestofthehall,thereisaJianzheninterestingPavilionnearthepool.Thepavilionisdecoratedwithexquisiteornaments,andthefiguresandflowersarelifelike.Therearetwostoneboatsbesidethepavilion.Thestoneboatshoreisthedarkfragrantstudio,fromwhichyoucanturnsouthalongthecorridortoreachthewaterfallPavilion,whichisthehighestplaceinthegarden.TheWestscenerycenterofthegardenisWenmeiPavilion,infrontofwhichisshuangxianxiangPavilion.ShuangxiangxianpavilionhasafanPavilioninthesouthwestcornerandacourtyardbehindit,whichisfreshandelegant.
ShizilinusedtobethebackgardenofBodhiorthodoxtemple.In1341ad,Zenmastertianru,aneminentmonk,cametoSuzhoutopreachBuddhistscripturesandwaswelcomedbyhisdisciples.Inthefollowingyear(thesecondyearofemperorShundiZhizheng,thelastemperoroftheYuanDynasty),thedisciplesboughtlandandsetupahousetobuildaZenforestforZenmastertianru.Builtin1342A.D.inthesecondyearofZhizhengreignoftheYuanDynasty,thegardenwasbuiltbythedisciplesofZenmastertianruWeizeforhismaster.Itwasinitiallynamed"ShizilinTemple",andlaterrenamed"PutiZhengzongTemple"and"ShengenTemple".
InthesixthyearofHongwuinMingDynasty(A.D.1373),73yearoldgreatcalligrapherNiZan(namedYunlin)passedthroughSuzhou.Heonceparticipatedingardeningandwrotepoemsandpaintings(paintedwiththepictureofthelionforest),whichmadethelionforestfamousandbecamearesortforBuddhistpreachingandliteratiwritingpoemsandpaintings.IntheearlyQianlongperiodoftheQingDynasty,thetemplegardenbecameaprivateproperty,isolatedfromthetemplehall.Itwasalsocalledwusongyuanbecausetherewerefivepinetreesinthegarden.
Inthe17thyearofWanliintheMingDynasty(1589A.D.),monksoftheMingfamilycamefromChang'antorebuildtheShengentempleandtheBuddhaHallinShizilin,andreappeartheprosperousscene.DuringthereignofEmperorKangxi,thetempleandthegardenwereseparated.Later,itwasboughtbyHuangxingzu,thefatherofHuangXiandthemagistrateofHengzhou,andnamed"Sheyuan".
OnFebruary11,1703,EmperorKangxioftheQingDynastytouredhereandgranted"LionForestTemple".Later,EmperorQianlongoftheQingDynastytouredthelionforestsixtimesandsuccessivelygranted"mirrorwisdomandroundlight","paintingZenTemple"andexisting"zhenqu"plaques.Inthe36thyearoftheQianlongreignoftheQingDynasty(1771AD),HuangXiwasthenumberonescholarinseniorhighschool.Herefinedhismansionandreorganizedthecourtyard,andnamedit"wusongyuan".BythemiddleofthereignofEmperorGuangxuoftheQingDynasty,Huang'sfamilywasindecline,andthegardenhadfallen,buttherockerywasstillthere.
In1917,ShanghaipigmentgiantPeiRunsheng(thegreatgrandfatheroftheworld-famousarchitectI.M.Pei)boughtthelionforestfromLiZhongyu,thechiefcivilaffairsofficer.Ittooknearlysevenyearstorenovatethelionforest.Somenewscenicspotswereaddedandnamed"LionForest".Foratime,lionforestcoveredSuzhoucity.Beirunshengwaspreparingfortheopeningup,buthefailedbecauseoftheoutbreakoftheAntiJapanesewar.Afterbeirunshengdiedin1945,Shizilinwasmanagedbyhisgrandsonbeihuanzhang.Afterliberation,thedescendantsdonatedthegardentothestate,andSuzhougardenmanagementofficetookovertherenovationandopenedittothepublicin1954.
Duetotheriseandfalloftheforestgarden,thetemple,gardenandhousewereseparatedandcombined,thetraditionalgardeningtechniquesandBuddhistideaswereintegrated,andthemodernBeifamilyintroducedtheWesterngardeningtechniquesandancestraltempleintothegarden,makingitatemplegardenintegratingtheprinciplesofZenandthepleasureofgarden.
1、Hall,carHall
EntertheeastgateoflionforestfromGardenRoad,whichwasthemaingateofChengxunYizhuang.OnthedoorhungaplaquewrittenbyEmperorQianlong.Beforeliberation,whenitwasaprivatehouse,itwasnoteasytoopenit.Afterliberation,itwasopenedasthemaingateofShizilin.Thehighthresholdwasthesedanhall,whichwastheplacewherethesedancarsusedtostop.Oppositetothecardoorwasthewestgate.Abovethetwodoorswerebrickforehead,respectivelytitled"rightaccess"and"leftaccess".

NowwehavecometoYanyuhall.Yanyumeanspeaceandhappiness."YanYutang"comesfromthebookofsongs,whichsays"YanYutangisfamousforitsstyle,butyoucan'tshoot.".YanYu:YanErentertainment;Wushe:neverstop.Form:asamodalparticle.Reputation:Tongyu,happy.Shoot(Yì):disgust."ZhengJian"said:"shoot,hatealso."Howhappyitistohaveadinnertogether.Iloveyouforever.Thishallisthemainhallofthewholegarden.Itwasoriginallyusedbythemasterofthegardentoentertainguests.ThishallisafamousmandarinduckhallinSuzhougardens.Theso-calledYuanyanghallisinahall,whichisdividedintoNorthandsouthpartsbyscreendoors.Fromtheinside,itseemsthatthetwohallsareconnected,butthelayoutisdifferent.ThebeamsandcolumnsoftheNorthHallaremadeofroundlogs,andthebeamsandcolumnsofthesouthhallaremadeofsquarelogs.Thedoorandwindowpatternsandfurniturelayoutofthetwohallsaredifferent,andtheplaqueshavetheirowntitles.Atthesametime,thefronthallisgenerallytheplacewherethehostentertainsthemaleguests,whilethebackhallistheplacewherethehostessmeetsthefemaleguests.Thearchitecturalstyleisabsolutelydifferent,whichreflectsthefeudalthoughtthatmenaresuperiortowomen.Pleasehavealookatthefootofwhatistheword,right!It'saword"Shou".Therearefivebatsontheside.Itmeans"fiveblessings"and"Shou"comesfirst,soShouisthecenter.Itshowsthattheownerhopesthatheandhisfamilywilllivealongandhealthylife,havemanychildrenandgrandchildren,bepeacefulandhappy.

Nowwecometothesmallsquarehall,whichisnamedbecauseitissquare.Ifyoulookatthelargeemptywindowsonbothsides,wecanfeelthattheyaretwopictures.OutsidetheeastwindowareplainpreservedChimonanthusandoutsidethewestwindowareurbanmountainforests.ThisisakindofgardeningartofSuzhougardens,calledframeview.Itcanchangewiththechangeofseasonsandthemovementoffeet.Wemightaswellhaveatry.Thehallischaracterizedbysquarearchitectureandcomponents,andthethreepavilionsandarchesareasmallandexquisitegatheringplaceforliterarysociety.Underthebackwindowofthehallisthe"goldenbrick".ThisbrickisspeciallybakedfortheQingDynastypalacefloor.
4、Jiushifeng
Outofthesmallsquarehall,youcanseethenineLionPeakinthehallgarden.Thispeakstandsinfrontofthewall.Atfirstglance,itlookslikeninelionsplayingfreely.Ifyoulookatthisstoneandseethechangingcloudsinthesky,youmustcooperatewithimagination.Thebeautyliesbetweentheimageandthenonimage.TherearehalfpavilionsintheEastandwestofthecourtyardtoextrudespacetohighlightthenineLionPeak.Ifyoulookcarefully,youwillfindninelionsindifferentshapes.Theyarecharming,naiveandlovely.Thereare500lionsofdifferentsizesandshapesinthelionforest.Wewillseemanymoreinthefuture.
5、Zhibaixuan
Throughthebrick"fun"(fromTaoYuanming's"gardendaycaretobecomefun"sentence),wecometozhibaixuan.Thisiswheremonkspreach.IntheTangDynasty,whentheZenmasterCongZong(knownasZhaoZhouFADao)wasteachingZenBuddhism,nomatterwhathisdisciplesaskedhim,healwayssaid:"cypressinfrontofthecourt",whichmeansthattheZenpractitionersshouldunderstanditbythemselvesfromthemysterioushints.SoitisnamedBaixuan.ThisisalsotheplacewheretherelativesoftheBeifamilygettogether.Theplaque"YifengZhibai",writtenbyWangTongyu,ishungabovethehall."Zhibai"referstothecaseofZenBuddhism,while"Yifeng"referstotheallusionofShiFengmadebyMiFuinSongDynasty.ThefollowingisthepaintingofShoubai,whichwasjointlyproducedbyfamouscalligraphersandpaintersin1988.ZhangXinjiapaintedredplum,WuMumuwroteancientcypress,XuShaoqingpaintedLakestone,andFeiXiniwroteinscriptions.Therearestairsbehindthescreendoortogoupstairs.ThethirdfloorisalsocalledTingyubuilding,whichisnamedafterthegardenowner'scollectionofstonerubbings.It'snamedafterthewindow.Lookingfromthewindow,youcanseethattherearemanystrangepeaksontheoppositeside.
Infrontofthehall,therearerockeries,cypressesanddragons.Woyunbaoislocatedamongtherockeries.Thisrockeryisthemostfamousrockeryintheclassicalgardens.Therearefourpathsinit,whichareintertwinedandintricate.EmperorQianlongdidn'tgooutaftertwohours.Thereisalsoachessboardholeinit.ItissaidthatLVDongbinandtieguailiplayedchess.TherearesomefamousstonessuchasHanhuiandtuyueonthefalsepeak.Therearestrangepinesandcypressesbetweenthestones,justlikeabeautifullandscapepainting.ItissaidthatEmperorQianlongoncetookapicturehere.Pleasetakeaphotohere.
6、Jianshanlou
Thefalsemountainpeakcanbeseenfromthewindowofthisbuilding,whichisnamedafterthepoeticmeaningofTaoQianofJinDynasty:"pickingchrysanthemumsundertheEastfence,leisurelyseeingNanshan".However,thisbuildingisclosetotherockery,andthereisadirectaccesstotherockeryonthesecondfloor.Itcanbesaidthatthebuildingisbuiltontherockery.Theareaofjianshanlouisonlyonetenthofthatofzhibaixuan.Thatistosay,itsetsofftheheightofzhibaixuananddoesnotcompetewithrockery.Itcanbesaidthatithasuniqueingenuity.
8、HualanHall
Wewentwestthroughthecorridortotheflowerbaskethall.Theflowerbaskethallisnamedaftertheflowerbasketshapecarvedonthecolumnendofthehallanddecoratedwiththeflowerbasketpattern.In1945,aJapanesesurrenderceremonywasheldinthishall.ThescreendoorwasengravedwithahugepictureofMatsushita,andtheofficialscripthorizontalplaque"windinthewater"indicatedthatitwasagoodplacetoenjoythelotusinsummer.Originallyknownas"Lotushall",itwasburneddownin1968,andthenmovedfromZhenghouseinloumentoHualanhall.Theso-calledflowerbluehallisasmallhall,inwhichthewalkingcolumndoesnotfalltotheground,butischangedintoaveryshortheavylotuscolumn,andtheendofthecolumniscarvedintoaflowerblueshape.

OutoftheflowerbaskethalltothewestiszhenquPavilion.Theword"zhenqu"waswrittenbyEmperorQianlonghimself.Thereissuchastory.IntheQingDynasty,whenEmperorQianlongvisitedthegarden,HuangXi,thenumberonescholar,sawthethreewords"reallyinteresting"writtenbyEmperorQianlong.Hefeltthattheword"you"wastoovulgar,soheaskedtheemperortobestowtheword"you"andlefttheword"reallyinteresting".Thereisa"scholarhat"decorationonthepavilion,whichhasfar-reachingimplications.Itissaidthat"thescholaristheprimeminister'sRootSeedling".Tobecomethenumberonescholar,wemuststartfromthescholar.Gardenideaistoeducatefuturegenerationstostudyhard,hopingthatonedaytheywillwinthetitleofthegoldmedal.Thesameprincipleappliestodaywhentallbuildingsrisefromtheground.Now,wecanenjoythesceneryofHuxinPavilion,Jiuqubridge,stoneboat,waterfall,poolandlake,andtakephotosasasouvenir.Afterthat,wewillgatherintheeastofthestonearchbridge,drillholesandclimbmountainstoreallyappreciatethecharmoftheworld-famous"rockerykingdom".Theplaqueof"zhenqu"wasinscribedbyEmperorQianlongofQingDynastywhenhevisitedthelionforest.Thepaintedpillarsandcarvedbeamsinthepavilionareresplendent,showingtheroyalstylecompletelydifferentfromtheelegantgardenarchitectureinthesouthoftheYangtzeRiver.Thepavilionissurroundedbypicturesquescenery.IntheEast,youcanseetheflowerbaskethallnearthewater.Inthesouth,youcanseetherockerygroupnearthewater.Inthewest,therearemountainsandwaterfalls.Lookingtothewest,thepavilioninthecenterofthelake,theJiuquBridgeandthestonearchbridgedividethelakeintothreescenes:near,middleandfar.

Thenameofthisbuildingcomesfromthefamoussaying:theshadowisslanting,thewaterisclear,thefragranceisfloating,andthemoonisatdusk.Theshadowofsparseplumishorizontallyandobliquelyreflectedontheclearwatersurfaceatdusk
