Panyunduan'sfamilydeclinedinhislateryears.Panyunduandiedin1620__(the29thyearofWanliintheMingDynasty),andhisfamilygraduallydeclined,unabletobearthehugeexpensesofgardenrepairandmanagement.AttheendoftheMingDynasty,YuGardenwasmadeforZhangZhaolin.Fromthento1760(twenty-fiveyearsofQianlongemperor),inordernottoannihilatethisscenicspot,somelocalgentrymerchantsgatheredmoneytobuyYuGarden,andspentmorethantwentyyearstorebuildtheterraceandbuildthemountainstone.Atthattime,theEastGardeninTownGod'sTemplewasEast,thatis,today'sinnergarden,andtheYuGardenwasslightlyWest.
In1842,twenty-twoyearsago,thefirstOpiumWarbrokeout,andforeigninvadersinvadedShanghai.TheBritisharmytookovertheYuGardenandravagedit.In1853,inresponsetotheTaipingRevolution,ShanghaiXiaodaoSocietylaunchedanuprisinginShanghai.Aftertheuprisingfailed,theQingsoldiersburnedandlootedinthecity,andtheYuGardenwasseverelydamaged.Thebuildingssuchasthespringhall,thefragrantsnowhall,theosmanthusflowerhall,themoonhouseandsoonwereallonfire.
In1860(tenyearsofQingXianfeng),theTaipingArmymarchedintoShanghai.TheManchugovernmentcolludedwiththeBritishandFrenchinvaders,tookTownGod'sTempleandYuGardenasagarrisonoutsidethearmy,excavatedstonesandfilledpoolsinthegarden,andbuiltwesternstylemilitaryhouses.
After1875,thewholegardenwasdividedintomorethan20industrialandcommercialindustriesinShanghai,suchasbeanandriceindustry,sugarindustry,clothindustryandsoon.Ontheeveofliberation,theYuGardenpavilionsweredilapidated,therockerycollapsed,thepooldriedup,thetreeswithered,andtheoldlandscapesweregraduallyannihilated.
